A view looking toward the Glasshouse from the Gateshead Millenium Bridge

Our Gateshead

Gateshead isn't just a home... it's a lifestyle, it's a passion.

Our Population: 196,100

(ONS Census 2021)

Gateshead Metropolitan Borough is the largest of the five Tyne and Wear authorities, covering 55 square miles. It is a mix of urban, rural, and distinct community centres.

Our Heritage

With a number of listed buildings and 16 ancient monuments within the borough including Washingwells Roman fort and Dunston Staithes. Much of the medieval quayside was destroyed by an explosion and fire in October 1854. St Mary's Heritage Centre, with a history stretching back to at least the 12th century, is one of the few remaining links to this era.

Industrial Revolution

Gateshead was an important player in the coal mining, iron working, and pottery industries. Joseph Swan, the real inventor of the light bulb (sorry, Americans!) lived in Low Fell for a time, and his house was the first domestic property in the world to be lit by electricity.

Our Culture

We also boast modern icons including The Angel of the North, The Glasshouse International Centre for Music, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, and the Millennium Bridge. Our industrial legacy lives on with traditional manufacturing and engineering, and we have a growing community of software companies, VR designers, and pioneering media companies.

Our People

Gateshead is home to the third largest Orthodox Jewish community in the UK, established in 1887. It is an internationally recognised centres of religious study with institutions including the Gateshead Talmudical College, founded in 1929, and the Jewish Teachers’ Training College, founded in 1944.

Our Environment

We have more than 20 country parks including ancient woodland and meadows, as well as smaller local parks and walking routes. Many of these are reclaimed industrial land or incorporate historic features such as water mills and railway lines. Saltwell Park is one of the 10 most popular parks in the UK and won recognition as 'The People's Choice' by Keep Britain Tidy in 2017 and 2018.
