Clean Tyne motion success

At the September Full Council meeting, Gateshead councillors overwhelmingly backed a Liberal Democrat motion supporting stronger action to protect the River Tyne and coastline, with only two councillors voting against.

The motion was developed following a similar initiative in North Tyneside and comes as other councils across Tyneside are expected to consider comparable measures. While prompted by the spill of plastic pellets, known as nurdles, following an accident at the Port of Tyne in July 2026, the motion forms part of a wider effort to tackle pollution, improve water quality and strengthen environmental resilience across the region.

Councillor Amanda Wintcher, who proposed and spoke to the motion, said it was inspired by conversations with a North Tyneside councillor and volunteers involved in beach clean-ups and environmental campaigns. The motion recognises the work of volunteers, charities and council officers, supports continued regional collaboration, explores participation in a proposed Tyne Water Summit, and calls for consideration of a Water Quality Champion role within the council.

Although introduced by the Liberal Democrats, the motion reflects cross-party and cross-sector support for protecting the Tyne. The river is a shared asset that benefits communities across the region, and councillors heard how concerns about pollution and environmental protection extend well beyond party politics. Regional politicians, charity groups, and officials at all levels have been involved in the effort to push for change.

The motion also reflects long-standing Liberal Democrat priorities around tackling sewage pollution, improving water quality and ensuring communities are better prepared for environmental challenges. By securing broad support in the council chamber, councillors signalled a shared commitment to protecting the Tyne and coast for future generations.
